If you need to hire a skip but don't have a private driveway or off-road space to put it, you'll need to place it on the public road. This is a very common situation — but it does require a permit from your local council before the skip can be delivered.
What Is a Skip Road Permit?
A skip road permit (sometimes called a skip licence) is a legal requirement under the Highways Act 1980 whenever a skip is placed on a public highway. It gives the council advance notice of the skip's location and duration, ensures the skip is properly lit and marked at night, and protects you and the skip hire company from liability.
When Do You Need One?
You need a permit if the skip will be placed on any public road, pavement, or verge — including outside your own home. You do NOT need a permit if the skip is placed entirely on private land, such as your driveway, a private car park, or within the boundary of a construction site.
What About Bay Suspensions?
If the location where you want to place the skip has parking restrictions — such as a residents' parking bay, a pay and display bay, or double yellow lines — you'll also need a bay suspension. This temporarily suspends the parking restriction so the skip can be legally placed there. Bay suspensions are applied for separately and typically require more notice than a standard permit — usually 5–10 working days minimum.
How Long Does a Permit Take?
In East Sussex, permit applications are typically processed within 2–5 working days, though this can vary by district. For bay suspensions, allow at least 5–10 working days. It's always worth booking your skip and applying for any permits as early as possible to avoid delays to your project.
What Conditions Come With the Permit?
Once issued, a permit will typically require the skip to be marked with reflective lights at night, positioned so as not to obstruct visibility or access, marked with the hire company's details, and removed within the agreed timeframe.
