If you've got a clearance or construction project coming up, you'll quickly face the skip vs grab hire question. Both options remove large volumes of waste — but they work differently, suit different materials, and have different cost implications. Here's a straightforward guide to help you choose.
What Is Skip Hire?
Skip hire involves delivering a skip container to your site, leaving it while you fill it at your own pace, then collecting it when you're done. Skips come in a range of sizes — from 2 yard mini skips for small household clearances up to 8 yard builders skips for larger projects. They're ideal when you need to fill the container over several days and have a suitable place to put it.
What Is Grab Hire?
Grab hire uses a lorry with a hydraulic arm to pick up loose material directly from your site — over a wall, across a fence, or from a pile in the ground. The driver positions the grab arm above the material, picks it up, and loads it straight into the lorry body. A grab lorry can typically clear a large pile of material in 20–30 minutes.
When Should You Choose a Skip?
A skip is usually the better choice when: you need to fill the container over several days, you're clearing mixed waste including timber, plasterboard, metals, and general builders' waste, you have a driveway or yard to place the skip on (or we can arrange a road permit), and your project is generating waste gradually as work progresses.
When Should You Choose Grab Hire?
Grab hire is usually the better choice when: you have a large volume of inert material — clean hardcore, clean soil, or mixed soil and hardcore — already in a pile, you need it cleared quickly in a single visit, you don't have space for a skip on site, or the material is in an awkward location that a grab arm can reach over walls or fences.
What About Cost?
For small to medium volumes, skip hire is usually cheaper. For large volumes of inert material, grab hire often works out more cost-effective because a single grab lorry can clear in one visit what would take multiple skip loads — reducing both hire costs and your time investment.
Can I Put Any Waste in a Grab Lorry?
No — grab hire is specifically for inert waste: clean hardcore, clean soil, and mixed loads of soil and hardcore.
