What Is Clinical Waste?
Clinical waste is waste that poses a potential infection risk. In a business context, this typically includes used needles and sharps, contaminated dressings and bandages, clinical bags from care or nursing facilities, tattoo and piercing waste (needles, ink caps, contaminated materials), PPE contaminated with bodily fluids, and clinical boxes from medical or aesthetic procedures.
Who Generates Clinical Waste?
You might not think of your business as a clinical waste generator — but the legislation applies to a wide range of premises. If your business involves any of the following, you almost certainly generate clinical waste: tattoo and piercing studios, beauty salons (particularly those offering skin needling, semi-permanent makeup, or injectables), nursing and care homes, dental practices, GP surgeries and private clinics, veterinary practices, physiotherapy and sports medicine clinics, and pharmacies.
What Are Your Legal Obligations?
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, clinical waste must be: segregated from other waste at source, stored in appropriate, clearly labelled containers, collected by a licensed waste carrier, and transported to a licensed treatment facility. You must also retain records of all clinical waste collections — specifically Hazardous Consignment Certificates — for at least three years.
What Containers Do You Need?
Clinical waste must be placed in the correct containers depending on the type of waste. Yellow clinical waste bags are used for offensive or infectious waste, tiger-striped bags are used for offensive non-infectious waste, and yellow sharps bins are used for needles and sharps waste. How Does Collection Work?
